Calling all activists, organizers, and anyone and everyone who cares about the welfare of Baltimore's day laborers!
We need YOU to help stand beside the Camden Yards workers as they fight for a Living Wage!
Since 2004, temporary workers at Camden Yards have been struggling to receive the living wage that they deserve. After almost 3 years of hard work and demanding a living wage, resulting only in broken promises, the workers are fed up. They initiated face to face talks with the Maryland Stadium Authority and set a Sept 1 deadline for a binding living wage policy. The MSA has informed the United Workers that they will miss the deadline. The United Workers will be announcing their plan for ramping up pressure on August 15.
The plan will require immense commitment and hard work--not only on the part of leaders in the United Workers, but also from volunteers and allies. We are going to need a corps of volunteers-to make the plan function smoothly and safely.
Tasks needed include:
Driving leaders and volunteers between various sites
Doing publicity and outreach
Offering one's home to visiting supporters and - "Concert for Human Rights" musicians
Cooking food for a daily meal
Assisting with security at the "Concert for Human Rights" and at the event site
Engaging in a number of protest actions during the strike
Building props for demonstrations and visibility actions
You can be a part of what will surely be one of Baltimore's most historic worker rights struggles! Come to our upcoming training to sign up for a volunteer assignment, receive important pre-plan training, and learn more about the Stadium Workers' struggle.
When: August 19th, 3 p.m.
Where: AFSCME offices at 1410 Bush Street in Baltimore, MD
Snacks and a vegetarian/vegan friendly dinner will be provided.
